Halloween is an awesome holiday, so much more worth celebrating than just collecting candy from the neighbors. In our house Halloween planning began in late September. One of our family favorites was the tradition of "ghosting". We would find Halloween decorations, attach a small bag of candy and make cards that read "Happy Halloween. You've been Ghosted.. Pass it on!" Then we would take these and go all around town to their friends' homes and put them anonymously on the doors. As you can guess, the Ghosting spirit spread and so did the smiles!

With four children all trying to come up with costume ideas, it was also a challenging time. When they were small, we did our share of Princesses, Super Heroes and cute Animal costumes. Those were easy. However, as they got older they were annually in pursuit of "group" costume themes with their friends. We had The Wizard of Oz, hippies, Snow White and her dwarfs, sports teams, diva girls and even sailors to recall just a few. Half the fun was the discussions and planning that went into the process. Numerous trips to the party store, rummaging through closets, raiding Grandma's attic, making tie-dye t-shirts and raiding the girls old dance recital costumes were just a part of the fun. Of all the costumes I can recall over our 20 years of Halloween, my favorite had to be my son and his friends back in 1996. They decided to be the US Womens Olympic Gold Medal Gymnastic Team, complete with their own Bela Karolyi. They won Best Costume in the local parade and were the buzz of the neighborhoods as they trick or treated their way through town. It is memories like this that made me glad that we never settled for a quick costume purchase at the local store. Halloween truly was an event in our home.

We furthered the Halloween celebration with a huge Halloween party for all 4 kids, their friends and included the parents. This was no ordinary "Pin The Tail On The Pumpkin" party. This party evolved over the year into a "mega" event that in the kids memories was as big a part of Halloween as trick or treating. There were usually close to 40 kids plus at least 20 parents. They ate, went on a scary scavenger hunt and ended the night with a spectacular, very frightful, performance put on by the Dads. One year those crazy guys came parading down the street in full costumes, beating bongo drums, chanting and carrying torches; followed closely by a police car. It took a bit of explaining but the show went on! They would plan their show for weeks and it would change every year. One year it was a Monster Mash rock show, a sance a year later and a ghost from the graveyard on the loose in yet another year. Amidst the screams and the shrieks, there was a ton of laughter. Yes, like the costumes, this took a lot of work but was worth every moment of the planning.

As we approach Mothers Day I recall the agony of trying to choose an appropriate gift for my departed mother. My mother was difficult to please, and this was never so evident as when she opened my gifts. Unlike the more Americanized mothers, mine was Italian and quick to express her feelings.

My father tried to convince her that I didnt undervalue her.

Perfume, clothes, jewelry, no matter how carefully I tried to pick out the perfect present, she would exhibit some sign of disappointment, be it the soft sigh, the forced thank you, or even the more direct What the hell did you buy this for? Yet for a non-event I could show up with a donut and shed be happy for the thought. In fact, any used item was even more appreciated.

One Christmas I bought a ruby necklace, spending four times my budgeted allotment. It would be worth every penny to have my gift appreciated. Ruby was her birthstone, so I couldnt imagine her not loving the extra care I took to pick it out. My mistake. From the moment she dangled it from her hand, I knew she hated it. I could feel my heart itself swaying back and forth with the necklace, as she rocked it in disbelief. I dont think I said much that night, except to myself, vowing never again to do more than write a check, or place cash in an envelope.

That was not the last gift I gave my mother, though it was the last one I gave her while she was alive. When she died I gave the undertaker a pair of my shoes that had been in and out of high rises in New York City, places I suspected she would have enjoyed if she had been born a generation later, and given the opportunities I was lucky enough to have. Whatever she disliked about my life no longer mattered. Her negative comments about my gifts just gave me something else to hold onto, one more precious memory of her. But Id like to think she liked the shoes. Id like to think that one gift said it all.

I had high hopes for this costume, it looked like exactly what I needed from the picture. When I received it though, it was a bit different. The hat in the photo is cute, with both green and brown fabric, and looks large enough to go with the rest of the costume. In reality the hat is a tiny green beanie with a feather glued sloppily to the side. There is no brown band at all. Also, the collar on the main part is pictured as brown, but the one I received was green (although that's a pretty minor thing). I noticed the costume came with a tag with a photo showing the same one as shown on Amazon. Too bad it really doesn't look like that.

Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, was a very enlightened politician who had strong ties with the top brass in France and Britain during his time. He was one of the prime movers of the spirit of Republicanism in the U.S. dubbed as one of its founders. He was one of the two rare individuals given the Triple Crown distinction for having been the President, Vice President and the U.S. Secretary of State. Lastly, James Monroe the 5th American President was the one responsible to acquire the State of Florida. All three incredibly share the same date of deaths.

It is a huge coincidence to note that although all of these three leaders died on July 4, Adams and Jefferson died just several hours apart during the Golden Anniversary of the Declaration's signing. It was only five short years after Adam and Jefferson's death in 1826 that Monroe later succumbed to heart failure and Tuberculosis in the White House.

This costume with the muscle chest is great for the money. I chose to purchase a better mask and a pair of gloves because I plan to wear this for a few years. The only thing I didnt like is the ears on the mask, they are kind of floppy.A similar costume without the muscle chest looks more like adult pajamas.
